I found this marvelous steam conversion of a Motobecane moped at the web site of The Steam Car Club of Great Britain. It does show the Brits at their mechanical wizardry and eccentric best. I wonder, if you built this sort of thing in this country, how would you license it? Michigan law says a motorcycle is "a two- or three-wheeled motor vehicle, which has (1) A gasoline engine with more than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) piston displacement and two brake horsepower or (2) A top speed over 30 miles per hour on level surfaces.
A moped is defined as "A two- or three-wheeled vehicle with a motor which has no more than 50cc piston displacement producing two brake horsepower or less. The moped must have a power drive system that does not require shifting gears and cannot have a top speed exceeding 30 mph on level surfaces." Doesn't mention gasoline, so I guess it's still a moped.
